Incomparable experiences different routes, different weather, different boats, different people, different everything.

‘How To’ tips

Practical information answering questions like: When to be where? How to find a boat? How much does it costs? How long does it take to sail across the Atlantic? What’s the weather like? How to prepare? What to tell mum? How to provision healthy and stay healthy? How to manage waste? How (not) to catch a fish?

Purpose

Rediscover your values and what matters. In Ocean Nomad you’ll also learn in easy language why the ocean is so important, what’s happening with challenges like climate change, plastic pollution, overfishing and what YOU can do as captain and crew to contribute

It was time to take the dream to sail around the world to the next level. I figured if I can successfully cross the Atlantic ocean, I will continue chasing the dream to sail around the world.

There were just a few challenges to tackle. I had no boat, I had no idea about sailing, and the adventure funds were pretty low.  Three Atlantic crossings and dozen more crew experiences later I decided to pen the tips down and help you make an ocean crossing happen: happy, safe, and with purpose.

Ahoy! My name is Suzanne

Who is this ocean travel guide for?

The adventurous, the concious, the lifestyle designer, and salty sailor from zero to hero experience level

The book is like a buffet, with lots of inspiration and information for the:

  • Aspiring sailor ready to sail across the Atlantic

  • Captain who considers crew

  • searcher, ready for adventure time & a lifestyle change

  • Curious to what life on the ocean is like

  • One looking for PURPOSE

  • The change-maker looking to do more

  • Crew looking to make a safe and healthy passage

  • Off the beaten path adventure traveller looking to advance the adventure

  • Crew looking to build miles with an Atlantic Crossing

  • The eco-minded adventure traveller

“Though this guide has been written for (aspiring) crew, it is a must have onboard every boat. Not just because it is packed with tips for both captain and crew, but also because it gives a clear insight in the minds of hitch sailors. This is more than a ‘if-you-can-dream-it-you-can-do-it/-if-you-just-put-your-mind-to-it-it-will-happen’ guide. Just the fact that Suzanne undertook the effort to seriously look at the skipper’s point of view gives this guide a unique completeness. Seriously, it is part of my ship’s articles: I want every crew member to read it before they step on board!”

Suzanne inspired me to try the boat hitchhiking thing. From the first moment I read her writing, I knew that I wanted to do the same! And it worked out! We sailed from Canary Islands to Cape Verde, and went from Cape Verde to Barbados. Suzanne has been a major source of inspiration and information!”

“Until now I had never even considered this way of travel. This book has changed my perspective. It now feels possible, achievable and a very real prospect to sail across the Atlantic ocean. But what makes this book stand out from the rest is that it has a purpose behind it and one that I am now inspired to learn more.”

Ocean adventure travel inspiration and resources

“Ocean Nomad contains actionable information for anyone involved (or interested) in hitch-sailing. More than a simple adventure story, or even a personal memoir of what the author did right and wrong when sailing as crew across the Atlantic (3 times!), the book is a comprehensive look at all aspects of crewing, with interviews of 32 captains and 58 sailors who sailed the Atlantic Ocean for a wide perspective. I recalled fondly the year my best friend and I took a sailing-ship cruise in the Caribbean, helping to raise or lower sail, sleeping on deck, our adventures on the many tiny islands we stopped at (described by the captain as “Christopher Columbus, 3rd voyage, sailed by, didn’t stop”), and being on watch when the bilge pump broke. This book is finding its way into the stockings of many friends and relatives for Christmas this year — the ocean activist who is passionate about corals, a former Navy man who loves books about boats, an armchair adventurer who loves travel, a nature lover who has already hiked the Camino Real, and of course my sailing buddy.”

Dreams are meant to be pursued– Not postponed!

I can NOT imagine ever needing another book on hitch-sailing the Atlantic. I loved the quotes, both from well-known people and from other adventurers. I LOVED the photos. The book is super-well organized and really easy to flip back through. Mine is highlighted in a number of places for future reference. Details like what to do with waste at sea, or what to do at various ports and cities, or how to use the restroom, how to land a good boat to cross in, etiquette, even at-sea recipes! SO MUCH information packed into this gem. I’ve never done any kind of sailing but after reading this book, I’d really like to.

Yes, the book is about hitch-sailing and loving the ocean, but most of all she encourages you to take the step to pursue the dream instead of postponing it. So read the book, explore what works for you and create your own adventure!”

“Ocean Nomad is a huge value bomb that makes even the stiffest armchair traveler want to get up, hitch a ride, and cross the ocean. It also does a great job in creating awareness of the grave state the oceans are in, and of the huge impact we can make – if only we choose to.”

“Having sailed with Suzanne from France to the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and to St Lucia I have seen how enthusiastic and committed to her mission she is. Having read her book now I can sense the enthusiasm coming out at me from the pages and feel that her book is an inspiration and fantastic guide on hitch sailing and ocean preservation. It should be on every yacht out there at sea.

“Suzanne’s book is a two-part guide book. The first half guides you into the nomadic world of sailors. Once you have arrived, the second half implores your vital participation and duty to becoming an ocean advocate. This ambitious guide book is the spark that will ignite your sense of adventure and provoke your compassion to creating a better world.”

“I loved reading about the boat hitch hiking adventures and how Suzanne does sensitization work about our oceans. So much that she inspired me to try the boat hitchhiking thing as well. From the first moment I read her writing, I knew that I wanted to do the same! I just loved reading with how much passion she realizes her dream step by step. When we were full of doubts if it was the right thing to do, I returned to what she wrote and re-convinced myself that it was all for the best. And it worked out! We sailed from Canary Islands to Cape Verde. There we spent one month looking for a boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean. We finally found one and went from Cape Verde to Barbados. Suzanne has been a major source of inspiration!”

Paulina Luxembourg

“After meeting Suzanne in January 2014 I followed her adventures closely via Social Media. When she started her first hitch-sail adventure I was absolutely amazed: is it really possible to cross an ocean if you don’t have sailing experience!? Inspired by Suzanne’s adventures and her very well provided details and information on the subject, I felt totally ready to throw off the bowlines myself. And I did! To me, Suzanne is THE example of ‘if you put your mind to it, you can do it’. This book will inspire and inform many more adventurous around the world. Thanks Suus for being such an inspiration and friend!”
