Learn about this nature-minded way of travel. Photos & Stories from three Atlantic Crossings as crew on strangers’ sailboats: twice from Europe to the Caribbean, and once from the Caribbean to Europe. Incomparable experiences different routes, different weather, different boats, different people, different everything.
It was time to take the dream to sail around the world to the next level. I figured if I can successfully cross the Atlantic ocean, I will continue chasing the dream to sail around the world. I was curious what it would be like to be on a boat for a longer period of time, to completely disconnect from everything but nature. Are the waves really as high as in the movies? What would it feel like to see land after weeks on the water?
There were just a few challenges to tackle. I had no boat, I had no idea about sailing, and the adventure funds were pretty low. And as ambitious as I am, I didn’t just want to sail; I wanted the whole package. I wanted to learn about all the aspects of seamanship, technical aspects of the boats, navigation, energy management, weather, the stars and I wanted to learn more about the ocean itself. And I felt the need to contribute, to attach a mission, an exploration, and meaningfulness to the adventure. I wanted to learn all this by being out there and exploring the sailing lifestyle. I wanted a lot. I was not the only one looking for this. I was curious, determined and naïve. Did I actually know what I was getting myself into by catching a sailboat ride across the Atlantic? No, I did not!
There wasn’t a go-to resource on how to catch a ride across the Atlantic. Loads of research, experimentation, three Atlantic crossings, dozen other crew experiences, and many interviews later, I have realized that I am the resource. I decided to pen it all down and help you make an ocean crossing happen: happily, safely and meaningfully!
Ocean Nomad is the book I wish was out there when I naively started the ‘Let’s hitchhike across the Atlantic’ adventure. Because there are a few things you have to be mindful of…

In this interactive adventure travel guide you’ll find
Connect to the ocean
Imagine a scene with no traffic, no news, no pollution, no civilisation. Just wind and water – plenty of that! A scene where you can gaze for hours to the millions of stars above you; enjoy the dozens of dolphins sliding through the water at the bow of the boat; admire the pink-orange-red sunrises and sunsets, without any airplane trails changing the fluffy and cauliflower-like cloud patterns. Day in day out, you can breathe the fresh ocean air. Imagine what energy, oxygen, and aliveness that brings to your well-being. There is no way to describe what it feels like seeing millions of stars, the milky way, and more shooting stars than wishes to be made. Experience this by sailing across the Atlantic.
For who is book Ocean Nomad?

The book is like a buffet, with lots of inspiration and information for the:
Dreams are meant to be pursued– Not postponed!
I can NOT imagine ever needing another book on hitch-sailing the Atlantic. I loved the quotes, both from well-known people and from other adventurers. I LOVED the photos. The book is super-well organized and really easy to flip back through. Mine is highlighted in a number of places for future reference. Details like what to do with waste at sea, or what to do at various ports and cities, or how to use the restroom, how to land a good boat to cross in, etiquette, even at-sea recipes! SO MUCH information packed into this gem. I’ve never done any kind of sailing but after reading this book, I’d really like to.
What others say
“I loved reading about the boat hitch hiking adventures and how Suzanne does sensitization work about our oceans. So much that she inspired me to try the boat hitchhiking thing as well. From the first moment I read her writing, I knew that I wanted to do the same! I just loved reading with how much passion she realizes her dream step by step. When we were full of doubts if it was the right thing to do, I returned to what she wrote and re-convinced myself that it was all for the best. And it worked out! We sailed from Canary Islands to Cape Verde. There we spent one month looking for a boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean. We finally found one and went from Cape Verde to Barbados. Suzanne has been a major source of inspiration and information!”
“I hadn’t even gone further than Mediterranean and seen the ocean even once in my life. I found out about Suzanne who stood out there with her stories across the Atlantic. The positive vibe she was sparkling in our cor- respondence encouraged me, and has always made me sure that I could do whatever I dream of. Thank you, Suzanne for helping me opening up a new path, a new mindset of life, not only with the way you hit the oceans but also with you being so sensitive about the future of our world and the oceans and making efforts for it.”
Ocean Nomad, that breaks all boundaries and limitations you might think you had. The book really inspires you to take action and follow your bliss. The fourth section gives you a thorough inside in the ecological importance of our oceans and your role in saving them. The author shares many facts and experiences of her journey’s on sailing ships all over the globe. She explains why we all need the oceans and how they provide the biggest amount of oxygen on earth for us. You really learn to respect and appreciate the connection we have with the ocean. While reading the book you wonder: What can I do to help? The author explains how we all can help to regenerate the oceans. She also shows what already has been done by numerous organizations and individuals, which gives us hope for the future. The information in this book could be life and earth saving! When you really apply it, you can make a difference and a great contribution to not only saving the earth and oceans, but saving your health in the process. And it’s not difficult or a lot of work. It’s easy and can even be fun. And who knows you might even sail off one day and explore the beauty of the oceans firsthand.
It’s a huge value bomb that makes even the stiffest armchair traveler want to get up, hitch a ride, and cross the ocean. It also does a great job in creating awareness of the grave state the oceans are in, and of the huge impact we can make – if only we choose to.
We loved Suzanne’s book. Her passion is unwavering and her commitment to saving our oceans is sincere. I had the opportunity to meet her at the Our Oceans conference in Malta and she is “The Real Deal”.
This book makes a great gift for the Holiday’s 😉
