Sailing back into Europe: The Strait of Gib!

A lighthouse. Beeping phones. Airplane stripes. Fishing boats. The smell of pine trees! We are approaching Cabo Sao Vicente, the most western point of mainland Europe. That’s what struck me most: suddenly having the smell of pinetrees… after days of ocean breathing. Very special. It’s the start of the most exciting and challenging part of the passage: the Strait of Gibraltar!

The Difference YOU make by spending local: 7 reasons

‘Buenos Dias Guapa!’, Señor Pepe says while watching the TV from his home-trainer. He’s wearing a T-shirt that says ‘Aqui todo es muy bueno‘, meaning ‘Here’s everything very good.’ Pepe moves from his home-trainer to the counter where his ‘caña‘ (glass of beer) is located. Before I order I’m already offered to try a piece of the local cheese. ‘How was the beach today?’ he asks. I tell him about my day and order some seasonal fruit. Read more

Morocco’s labyrinth of Blue: Chefchaouen

Excited I’m putting on my new shoes bought on the local Thursday market of Chefchaouen. Oops, two left shoes! This came at no surprise as the market existed out of piles of things, shoes included. I went back, the shoe salesman was still there, he laughed about the incident, and then took off on a 15-minute market exploration in search for the right right shoe. Shoe found and everybody happy for only 800 Dirham (9 euro! I bet I could have got it for 5 but the price was fair enough don’t you think?). This is hospitality in Chefchaouen, a blue mystic mountain town in the Rif region of Morocco. Read more

Tarifa: the outdoor playground of Europe

Valdevaqueros-kitesurf-tarifaSalud! From the Chiringuito (beachbar), my amigos and I cheers with a Tinto de Verano (ice cold lemon summer wine) on another classic kitesurfing day. We’re watching some last colourful kites playing in the ocean and admire the sunset spectacle of today.  This is ‘Tarifeando‘, the verb used for spending good times in the outdoor playground of Europe: Tarifa!
